Supermarkets are being accused of creating too much packaging waste. Not sure they are the right target. Just yesterday I noticed yet another company has entered the (dubious?) market for small plastic packets of fresh fruit pieces. Not only are these a huge waste of packaging, the cost is incredible! For 1/3 of the price, you could buy nature packaged whole fruit – and eat the packaging too! Ignoring for a while the regular packaging for items such as ready meals, the wrappers of ordinary sweets and crisps that line the aisles of supermarkets and corner shops everywhere must contribute masses to landfill.
Until wooden plastic offers a viable option, suppliers are the ones who need to reduce and eventually replace pointless packaging. Perhaps the gov is hoping the supermarkets will pressure their suppliers?
Fight back club: Buy your food as nature supplied it and carry a backpack or re-usable carrier bag everywhere you go. Be prepared!
I have some ideas on a solution to much of this. Watch this space…
